Justice Department Announces Largest US Elderly Fraud Case

The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday unveiled what it says is the largest fraud case involving elderly Americans in U.S. history, charging more than 200 people and bringing civil actions against dozens more.

The defendants, including many foreign nationals, are accused of defrauding more than 1 million elderly Americans out of more than $1 billion, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said at a press conference in Washington.

“It’s a despicable crime these people are doing,” Sessions said. “They’re the kind of people we need to be effective at targeting.”

Each year, an estimated $3 billion are stolen or defrauded from millions of elderly Americans, according to the Justice Department.

“This is a serious and growing problem,” said Acting FBI Deputy Director David Bowdich.
